Trump Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America; AP Refuses to Adopt New Name
Jan 25, 2025, 03:47 AM
President Donald Trump's administration has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and reverted Alaska's Denali peak back to Mount McKinley, fulfilling a campaign promise. The Interior Department announced it is implementing these changes effective immediately and is working to update the names in the Geographic Names Information System. The U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Geological Survey have started using 'Gulf of America'. While supporters, including former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, praise the move as a restoration of American heritage, others are critical. The Associated Press has stated it will continue to use 'Gulf of Mexico' despite the executive order, though it will adopt 'Mount McKinley'. International recognition of the new names remains uncertain, as other countries are not bound by the U.S. decision.
