VisitTrump Picks Ron Johnson, Ex-CIA and Green Beret, as Ambassador to Mexico Over Kari Lake
Dec 11, 2024, 02:13 AM
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Ronald (Ron) Johnson, a former U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, ex-CIA official, and Green Beret, to serve as the United States ambassador to Mexico. Johnson, who has extensive experience in security and intelligence, was selected over Kari Lake, a former Republican Senate candidate from Arizona and promoter of the border wall, who was previously reported to be in contention for the role. Trump stated that Johnson will work closely with Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio to promote national security and prosperity through strong "America First" foreign policies. Kimberly Breier, former assistant secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, praised the nomination, calling Johnson "deeply knowledgeable on the region" and a "great pick." Johnson's appointment is expected to strengthen U.S.-Mexico relations and address migration and security issues.
