VisitTrump Names Landau Deputy Secretary; Ex-CIA Johnson Ambassador to Mexico; Rubio for Secretary of State
Dec 10, 2024, 08:06 PM
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Christopher Landau, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2019 to 2021 during his first term, as the Deputy Secretary of State. Landau's appointment has been positively received by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who praised his previous work in Mexico. Trump has also nominated Ronald Johnson, a veteran of the CIA and U.S. Army Special Forces who previously served as U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador during Trump's first term, as the new U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. Johnson's expertise in security and intelligence is expected to strengthen U.S.-Mexico relations, particularly on issues such as migration and counter-narcotics efforts. Senator Marco Rubio has been nominated as Secretary of State and is expected to work closely with Landau and Johnson on Latin American affairs, with both being recognized as experts on the region and strong opponents of its dictatorships.
