May 25, 2024, 08:51 PM
Former President Donald Trump has announced that his 2024 presidential campaign will accept cryptocurrency donations, marking the first time a major U.S. presidential candidate has embraced digital currencies for fundraising. The campaign will accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Dogecoin, and other cryptocurrencies through Coinbase Commerce, with donations reported as in-kind contributions. Trump has also vowed to build a 'crypto army' to support his campaign. Additionally, Trump expressed strong support for the cryptocurrency industry, stating that the U.S. must be a leader in the field and emphasizing his opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). He also promised to protect Bitcoin from government interference, specifically mentioning keeping Senator Elizabeth Warren and her 'goons' away from Bitcoin. Trump further pledged to support the right to self-custody for the nation's 50 million crypto holders and mentioned commuting Ross Ulbricht's sentence. These statements were made at the Libertarian National Convention.
