She informed the Des Moines Register over a year ago of her decision not to renew her contract after 2024. Her final Iowa poll, released just before the election, predicted that Kamala Harris would lead Donald Trump by 3 percentage points in Iowa. However, Trump won the state by 13 points, resulting in a 16-point discrepancy between the poll and the actual results. Selzer, once considered the 'gold standard' of polling, acknowledged the irony of her retirement following a significant polling miss, stating, "Would I have liked to make this announcement after a final poll aligned with Election Day results?
