Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has admitted to making false claims about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. During a recent vice presidential debate moderated by CBS News' Margaret Brennan, Walz was pressed on his previous statements, which were contradicted by local news reports and photographs showing he was actually in Nebraska at the time. Walz attempted to explain the discrepancy by stating he 'misspoke' and referred to himself as a 'knucklehead at times.' Despite initially dodging the question, he eventually conceded that he had not been in Hong Kong during the pro-democracy protests. Reports indicate Walz did not travel to Asia until August of that year, and he had made similar claims in 2014.
