Israel Vázquez, a three-time world boxing champion from Mexico, died on December 3, 2024, at the age of 46 after a battle with sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Known as "El Magnífico," Vázquez was a former super bantamweight champion renowned for his fierce fighting style and memorable bouts in the early 2000s. He gained prominence through his legendary four-fight series with compatriot Rafael Márquez, considered one of the most electrifying rivalries in boxing history. Vázquez also achieved notable victories over high-caliber opponents, including Oscar "Chololo" Larios and a remarkable comeback knockout against Jhonny Gonzalez. His death was confirmed by Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC). His passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from the boxing community, including his former trainer Freddie Roach, who described him as "a world champion and legend in boxing" and "one of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with." Vázquez is survived by his wife Laura and their children.
