VisitThird Avenue Bridge Over Harlem River Reopens After Overheating Caused Traffic Delays
Jul 8, 2024, 09:44 PM
The Third Avenue Bridge connecting the Bronx and Manhattan was stuck in the open position due to overheating machinery caused by excessive heat. The 120-year-old bridge's metal components expanded in the 90-degree weather, leading to significant traffic disruptions. FDNY Marine Units were deployed to cool down the machinery, and crews worked on realigning the structure. The bridge, which crosses the Harlem River, was closed in both directions, causing major traffic delays in the South Bronx. After several hours, the bridge was reopened to traffic, but residual delays persisted on nearby roads.
