VisitThailand Becomes First in Southeast Asia to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage, Effective January 2025
Sep 25, 2024, 04:45 AM
Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The landmark Marriage Equality Bill, endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, was published in the Royal Gazette on September 24 and will come into effect in 120 days, on January 22, 2025. This makes Thailand the third place in Asia to recognize same-sex unions, following Taiwan and Nepal. The bill, passed by parliament in June, allows same-sex couples to legally wed, marking a monumental step for LGBTQ+ rights in the region.
