The court's decision, made by a 7-2 vote, upheld a district court's earlier dismissal of the case, citing that it would violate the state constitution's separation-of-powers doctrine. The lawsuit stemmed from Webster's involvement in a case challenging the 2020 presidential election results in several states, which was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court for lack of standing. Attorney General Ken Paxton celebrated the ruling, describing it as an end to a 'witch hunt' against his office's leadership. A similar case against Paxton himself remains pending.
