The Texas Senate has introduced Senate Bill 2, a proposal to establish a school voucher-like program known as education savings accounts. This initiative, a priority for Governor Greg Abbott and top lawmakers, would allocate $10,000 annually per student for families to fund private school tuition and other educational expenses. For students with disabilities, the allocation would increase to $11,500, while homeschooling families would receive $2,000 per student. The bill, co-authored by Sen. Brandon Creighton, aims to empower families with the freedom to choose educational paths that best suit their needs. Sen. Creighton stated, 'This session, we are fully committed to passing universal, comprehensive school choice legislation, ensuring every Texas family has access to the educational opportunities they deserve.' Both the Texas House and Senate have included $1 billion in their budget proposals for this school choice program over the next two years, signaling strong legislative support. This move comes after previous attempts to pass similar legislation failed in the last legislative session, and would join Texas with 32 other states that already offer such programs.
