VisitTexas Judge Blocks Biden's New Gun Background Check Rule on May 19
May 20, 2024, 06:02 PM
A federal judge in Texas has issued a temporary restraining order on May 19 blocking the Biden administration's new rule expanding gun background checks. The rule, backed by President Joe Biden, would have required gun dealers to obtain licenses and conduct background checks when selling firearms at gun shows and online. The decision, handed down by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, came after a request from several plaintiffs, including the Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF). The ruling protects members of these organizations, as well as Texans, from the enforcement of the new regulation for the time being. The Biden administration's attempt to expand background checks was seen as a move to get closer to universal registration checks without additional legislation. The rule was issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
