Abbott launched Operation Lone Star in 2021 to address the issue, which he claims has successfully reduced illegal immigration into Texas by 87%. The governor's letters emphasize that the costs, borne by Texas taxpayers, should be the responsibility of the federal government, given its duty to secure national borders.
