VisitTexas Fined $250,000 After Fans Protest Pass Interference Call by Throwing Debris in 30-15 Loss to Georgia
Oct 20, 2024, 01:10 PM
In a contentious matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs on October 20, 2024, which ended with Georgia defeating Texas 30-15, a controversial pass interference call against Texas led to unrest among Longhorns fans. The penalty negated a critical interception by Texas, prompting fans to throw bottles, cans, and other debris onto the field at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. The game was delayed as Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian went onto the field to calm the crowd. After further discussion, the officiating crew reversed the pass interference call, reinstating the interception. The reversal sparked debate, as pass interference is typically a non-reviewable play. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) later issued a statement explaining that the officials conferred and determined the initial call was incorrect. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey stated, "The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event." In response to the incident, the SEC fined Texas $250,000 for the misconduct of its fans. The university is required to identify individuals who threw objects onto the field and prohibit them from attending athletic events for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season. Additionally, Texas must review and update its alcohol availability policies. Texas leadership, including Athletics Director Chris Del Conte, President Jay Hartzell, and Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife, issued an apology to Georgia, the SEC, and the officiating crew, stating, "This type of behavior will not be tolerated."
