VisitTexas AG Paxton Sues Biden Over 450,000 Voters' Citizenship Data; Virginia to Restore 1,600 Registrations Before Election
Oct 25, 2024, 03:06 PM
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, accusing it of refusing to assist in verifying the citizenship status of 450,000 of the state's 17.9 million registered voters. Paxton argues that these voters did not use state-issued driver's licenses or ID cards to register, so their citizenship was not verified. He contends that the federal government is required to help states confirm voter eligibility and alleges that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has failed to provide necessary citizenship data ahead of the upcoming election, despite noncitizen voting being extremely rare. Meanwhile, in Virginia, over 1,600 voters have had their registrations canceled since August under a state program initiated by Governor Glenn Youngkin's executive order targeting noncitizens. The U.S. Department of Justice and advocacy groups contend that the program is illegal. U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles, a Biden appointee, has ordered Virginia to halt the voter removal initiative and restore the registrations of those affected, just days before the presidential election. The ruling stated that the program violates the National Voter Registration Act.
