VisitTEPCO Extracts Fuel Debris from Fukushima Reactor for First Time, Removing 3 Grams
Nov 7, 2024, 08:09 AM
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has successfully extracted a sample of fuel debris from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, as reported by Kyodo. This marks the first time Japan has removed melted fuel from the site since the 2011 meltdown. The first trial involved the removal of a small amount, approximately 3 grams, of nuclear fuel debris, which was placed into a special container. This operation is a significant step towards the cleanup of the plant, with the data obtained being crucial for analyzing the retrieval of the remaining 880 tons of debris. The demonstration was completed at 11:40 a.m. today, 13 years after the meltdown.
