Tensions have escalated between China and the Philippines following a series of confrontations in the South China Sea. On June 17, Chinese forces intercepted a Philippine resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre outpost in Ayungin Shoal. During the encounter, Chinese troops boarded Philippine vessels, confiscated firearms, and injured a Filipino sailor who lost a finger. The Philippines accused China of piracy and demanded the return of seized equipment and compensation for damaged boats. The United States condemned China's actions as 'aggressive and dangerous,' reiterating its support for the Philippines under the mutual defense treaty. The incident has drawn international concern, with the Republic of Korea and Japan expressing grave concerns over China's actions. The Philippine foreign ministry denounced the illegal and aggressive actions of Chinese authorities, calling for respect for its sovereignty. China maintained a presence of 21 militia vessels and 2 CCG vessels, and used bladed weapons during the confrontation. Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner highlighted the severity of the incident.
