VisitTen Years Since MH17 Downing, Justice Remains Elusive for 298 Victims
Jul 17, 2024, 03:56 AM
A decade has passed since Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine by a Russian Buk surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 passengers and crew onboard, including 38 Australians, 196 Dutch, and 80 children. The incident occurred on July 17, 2014, in a region controlled by pro-Russian rebels. Despite a Dutch court convicting two Russians and a Ukrainian in absentia for their roles in the downing, Russia has refused to extradite the convicted individuals. The international community, including the EU and Australia, continues to urge Russia to take responsibility. Relatives of the victims are marking the 10th anniversary, but hopes for justice are fading as Russia maintains its stance of denial and the investigation remains stalled.
