VisitTarget Scales Back Pride Collection to Half Its Stores, Online After Backlash
May 10, 2024, 03:07 PM
Target has announced that it will limit the availability of its Pride Month collection to select stores and online after facing backlash and boycotts during the 2023 Pride season. The decision comes as a response to last year's conservative backlash over LGBTQ+ themed merchandise, which included trans-friendly slogans on children's T-shirts and 'tuck-friendly' swimsuits. This backlash not only affected sales but also led to confrontations in stores where customers tipped over displays and threatened employees. Due to the backlash hitting sales and historical sales performance, Target will only sell the collection in half its stores. Target plans to continue celebrating Pride Month by participating in local Pride events across the country, including its headquarters in Minneapolis.
