VisitTaiwan Receives First Batch of 38 M1A2T Abrams Tanks from U.S. in $1.25 Billion Deal, Totaling 108 Tanks
Dec 16, 2024, 08:01 AM
Taiwan has officially received its first batch of 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks from the United States, marking a significant enhancement of its military capabilities amid increasing tensions with China. The tanks arrived at the Port of Taipei on December 15, 2024, and were subsequently transported to an army training base in Hsinchu County. This delivery is part of a larger military procurement package that includes a total of 108 tanks, with the entire Foreign Military Sale (FMS) valued at NT$40.5 billion (approximately US$1.25 billion). This marks Taiwan's first new tank acquisition since the M60A3 tanks were received in 1994. The deal was originally approved in 2019 during the Trump administration. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense confirmed the arrival of the tanks, which are expected to bolster the island's defenses against potential Chinese military actions.
