VisitSyrian Rebels Seize Hama City Center, Free Prisoners, and Capture Military Airport
Dec 5, 2024, 11:56 AM
Syrian rebels have seized control of the strategically important city of Hama, marking a significant setback for President Bashar Assad's regime. The rebels entered the city on December 4, 2024, and within 24 hours, they had full control, with the Syrian army announcing its withdrawal to avoid civilian casualties. The opposition forces captured key locations within Hama, including the military airport, Hama Central Prison, and several neighborhoods such as Al-Mazarib, Al-Sawaeq, and Al-Arbaeen. The advance into Hama was part of a broader offensive that saw the rebels taking over at least 20 towns and villages in the surrounding countryside, including the strategic Mount Zain al-Abidin. The Syrian army confirmed its retreat to the west and south of the city, unable to halt the rebel advance. Hundreds of prisoners were freed from Hama Central Prison, and the rebels also took control of the Alarbeen roundabout.
