VisitSyrian Rebels Free Hundreds from Sednaya Prison, Assad's 'Human Slaughterhouse', Amidst Search for Missing
Dec 11, 2024, 11:57 AM
Syrian rebels have freed hundreds of detainees from Sednaya Prison, known as the 'human slaughterhouse,' located on the outskirts of Damascus. The prison, infamous for its history of torture and inhumane conditions under the Assad regime, was raided following the opposition's control over Damascus. Despite the liberation, searches for secret underground cells by the White Helmets rescuers yielded no results. The body of prominent Syrian activist Mazen al-Hamada, who had been missing for a long time, was discovered in this torture center. Families of those who disappeared under the Assad regime continue to wait near the prison, hoping to find their missing relatives. The prison, established in the 1980s, has been a symbol of the Assad regime's brutality, with reports of severe psychological trauma among recently released prisoners.
