VisitSyrian Rebels Enter Aleppo for First Time Since 2016 Amid Heavy Fighting
Nov 29, 2024, 12:47 PM
Syrian rebel forces have launched a major offensive in the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, advancing rapidly towards and into the city of Aleppo. Beginning on November 27, the rebels seized numerous villages and strategic locations, including Base 46—the largest Syrian regime base in western Aleppo. By November 29, the rebels reportedly entered Aleppo city, capturing neighborhoods such as Al-Hamdaniya and New Aleppo, and reaching Saadallah Al-Jabri Square in the city center. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy clashes and significant casualties on both sides, with over 240 deaths during the fighting. Assad's forces and Iranian-backed militias have been retreating amid the rebel advance. This marks the first time since 2016 that rebel forces have entered Aleppo city.
