VisitSyrian Rebels Capture Key Base Near Aleppo in 'Deterrence of Aggression' Offensive
Nov 27, 2024, 12:52 PM
Fierce clashes have erupted between Syrian rebel factions, primarily Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and Syrian government forces in the western countryside of Aleppo. The opposition forces, under the Fatah al-Mubin Operations Room, have launched a major offensive named 'Deterrence of Aggression,' capturing multiple strategic locations including the 46th Regiment base and the villages and towns of Qubtan al-Jabal, Anjara, Bala, and Hawr. Rebel forces have advanced approximately 7 kilometers, bringing them within 8 to 10 kilometers of Aleppo city center. The offensive, which included the use of armored vehicles and a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED), marks the largest operation by opposition forces since 2020. Drone footage has emerged showing regime soldiers retreating from their positions, and reports indicate that five regime soldiers have been captured. There are also unconfirmed reports of casualties among Russian special forces. In response, Russian warplanes and Syrian government forces have conducted heavy airstrikes and artillery bombardments against rebel-held areas, including Idlib and Darat Izza. The escalation raises concerns over civilian safety, as intensified fighting may lead to significant casualties among the local population.
