Apr 26, 2024, 10:30 AM
Sweden has recently completed its formal integration into NATO, a significant move announced by Swedish officials including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The integration, achieved within just eight weeks of joining the alliance on March 7, marks a pivotal shift in Sweden's military strategy. This includes plans to increase the military budget to 2.6% of GDP, surpassing NATO's common goal, and sending troops to Latvia as part of NATO's deployment in the Baltic region. The decision comes as Sweden aims to bolster its presence along the borders shared with Russia and Belarus. Additionally, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Mr. Fukazawa of Japan attended a reception marking Sweden's NATO accession at the International House of Japan, highlighting international support for this expansion. Swedish lawmakers also propose a defense budget boost and conscription expansion.
