VisitSupreme Court Unanimously Rules 9-0 for NRA in First Amendment Case Against New York Official
May 30, 2024, 02:24 PM
The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously ruled in favor of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in its First Amendment dispute with a former New York state official. The 9-0 decision, authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, allows the NRA to pursue claims that the official, Maria Vullo, violated its free speech rights by pressuring DFS-regulated financial institutions, including insurance companies, to cut ties with the gun rights group. The court found that the NRA plausibly alleged that Vullo's actions constituted unlawful coercion, thereby infringing on the NRA's rights. This ruling revives the NRA's lawsuit, which had previously been dismissed by lower courts.
