The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, highlighting systemic issues regarding the safety of women in workplaces. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is hearing the case on August 20, expressing concern over the delay in filing the FIR and the role of hospital authorities and the police. The Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report by August 22. Additionally, the Supreme Court has announced the formation of a National Task Force to recommend safety protocols for healthcare institutions across India. The Court also addressed the mob attack incidents at the hospital.
