VisitSudan's South Hospital in El Fasher Closes After RSF Attack
Jun 10, 2024, 12:30 PM
The last functioning major hospital in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur in Sudan, has been forced to close following an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group over the weekend. The attack on South Hospital, the only facility with surgical capacity in the area, has severely impacted access to life-saving services. The RSF reportedly looted the hospital, opened fire, and stole an ambulance. The closure has stretched the capacity of the remaining hospitals, further limiting medical care. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have condemned the attack, highlighting the dire consequences for the sick and injured in the besieged city. More than 15,000 people have been estimated to have been killed since the conflict started in April 2023.
