Jul 17, 2024, 08:21 PM
A nearly complete Stegosaurus skeleton, nicknamed 'Apex,' has set a new auction record by selling for $44.6 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York on Wednesday. The fossil, discovered in 2022, is the most complete of its species ever found and was initially estimated to sell for between $4 million and $6 million. The sale marks the highest price ever paid for a dinosaur skeleton at a public auction. The buyer of the fossil was hedge-fund billionaire Ken Griffin.
