VisitSS United States Bids Emotional Farewell, to Become World's Largest Artificial Reef
Oct 12, 2024, 10:46 PM
The SS United States Conservancy and pier landlord have reached an agreement to repurpose the historic ocean liner into the world's largest artificial reef. After being docked in Philadelphia for nearly three decades, the SS United States will depart for Norfolk, Virginia, for extensive preparations before its final transformation off the coast of Florida. The ship will be turned into an artificial reef in collaboration with a museum in Okaloosa County, Florida. This resolution follows a two-year-long dispute between the SS United States and Penn Warehousing. The ship bid an emotional farewell in Philadelphia as it prepares for a new chapter in its storied history.
