VisitSouth Korean Court Approves Arrest Warrant for Impeached President Yoon Over Martial Law Decree
Dec 31, 2024, 03:05 AM
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and suspended from power earlier this month over his decision to impose martial law on December 3, faces arrest after a court approved a warrant for his detention on December 31. The court also issued warrants allowing investigators to search his office and residence. South Korean law enforcement officials had requested the warrant as they investigate whether his short-lived martial law decree amounted to rebellion. Yoon had refused to appear for questioning. If carried out, the warrant, valid until January 6, would make Yoon the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested. The political crisis in South Korea is deepening, with hundreds of Yoon's supporters gathering at the gates of his private residence.
