VisitSouth Carolina Executes Richard Moore for 1999 Murder Despite Clemency Plea and Racial Discrimination Claims
Nov 1, 2024, 02:00 PM
Richard Moore, a South Carolina death row inmate, was executed by lethal injection on Friday at the Broad River prison complex for the 1999 murder of a convenience store clerk. Despite a clemency petition signed by more than 20 individuals, including the original presiding judge, two jurors, and a former state prison director, the U.S. Supreme Court denied his application to stay the execution. Moore, a Black man, argued that his jury selection was tainted by racial discrimination, as he was convicted by an all-white jury. His final appeal to Governor Henry McMaster for mercy was also denied. The execution was scheduled to begin at 6 pm.
