VisitSomalia's AhmedMoFiqi Confirms Military Aid from Egypt, Considers Supporting Ethiopian Rebels Amidst Tensions
Sep 15, 2024, 12:38 AM
Somalia's Foreign Minister, AhmedMoFiqi, confirmed that Somalia has received significant military aid from Egypt, including weapons and ammunition, to support the Somali National Army. Despite the absence of Egyptian troops in Somalia, the minister expressed hope for increased military cooperation. Additionally, the minister indicated that Somalia might consider supporting rebels fighting in Ethiopia if the Ethiopian government proceeds with its agreement with Somaliland. Ethiopia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, NebiyuTedla, criticized these comments, referring to Somali officials as 'Al-Shabaab agents.' The tensions have led to the postponement of talks between Somalia and Ethiopia, which were scheduled for September 17 in Ankara and mediated by Turkey. Somalia has set a precondition for any future talks, demanding that Ethiopia recognize its sovereignty.
