VisitSocial Security Fairness Act Discharge Petition Reaches 218 Signatures, Forcing House Vote to Repeal WEP & GPO
Sep 19, 2024, 08:01 PM
The bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act has garnered the necessary 218 signatures in a discharge petition to force a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. The act aims to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which have reduced Social Security benefits for millions of public servants, including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other federal employees. Representatives Garret Graves and Abigail Spanberger led the effort to secure the signatures. The bill has 327 cosponsors and will now move forward for a vote in the House. This marks the second successful discharge petition in the 118th Congress. The petition must ripen for a week before the vote is officially forced. If passed, it will restore the full Social Security benefits that these public servants have earned.
