VisitSocial Media Star Squirrel and Raccoon Seized and Euthanized in New York Test Negative for Rabies
Nov 13, 2024, 02:49 AM
Peanut the squirrel, a social media star, was seized from his owner in upstate New York and euthanized for rabies testing. The Chemung County Health Department, along with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, executed the warrant to seize Peanut and Fred, a raccoon, from a home in Pine City on October 30. Both animals were euthanized despite rabies tests coming back negative. The decision to euthanize the animals has sparked public outrage and led to threats against DEC employees. The union representing DEC officers clarified that the officers involved did not make the decision to euthanize the animals. Mark Longo, Peanut's owner, is seeking answers and justice, claiming the animals were marked for death days before the seizure. Chemung County Executive Chris Moss confirmed the rabies test results.
