Doctors have given him an estimated two to four years to live after being diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer. Despite this, Hoy has expressed that he still feels "lucky" and is determined to find hope and happiness "on the home straight." He has shared how he told his children about his diagnosis and is committed to making the most of his remaining years. His wife, Sarra Hoy, is also facing health challenges, battling multiple sclerosis (MS). Hoy revealed his condition in an interview with Decca Aitkenhead for The Sunday Times.
