VisitSingapore Ex-Minister S. Iswaran Jailed 12 Months for Accepting $300,000 in Gifts
Oct 3, 2024, 05:33 AM
A Singapore court has sentenced former Transport Minister S. Iswaran, 62, to 12 months in prison after he pleaded guilty on September 24 to charges of bribery and obstruction of justice. Iswaran, who accepted more than $300,000 worth of gifts—including tickets to the play 'Hamilton,' soccer games in England, and the Formula 1 race in Singapore—is the first ex-cabinet member in nearly 50 years to be jailed in the city-state known for its clean governance. The charges included four counts of obtaining gifts as a public servant and one charge of obstructing justice. The sentence exceeded the six- to seven-month term that prosecutors had sought.
