VisitShigeru Ishiba Elected Japan's Next PM After Defeating Takaichi in LDP Runoff
Sep 27, 2024, 05:50 AM
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, 67, as its new leader on Friday, paving the way for him to become the country's next Prime Minister. The leadership contest was triggered by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's decision not to seek another term. Ishiba secured victory in his fifth and final attempt to lead the party, defeating Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a runoff by 215 votes to 194. The unpredictable race featured nine candidates, including two women. Known for his plain-spoken opinions and dubbed a "military geek" for his strong interest in defense matters, Ishiba is expected to assume office next week.
