VisitSenate Rejects Sanders' Bid to Block Offensive Weapons Sales to Israel
Nov 21, 2024, 01:24 AM
The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to reject three resolutions led by Senator Bernie Sanders that aimed to block the sale of certain offensive weapons to Israel, including tank rounds, mortar shells, and Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs). Despite Sanders' efforts and support from a minority of Senate Democrats, the measures were defeated with votes of 79-18, 79-19, and 80-17 against the respective resolutions. This outcome reflects the Senate's stance on continuing U.S. military support for Israel amidst its ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting divisions within the Democratic party on the issue. A bipartisan majority, including 1/3 of Senate Democrats, voted against the resolutions.
