The U.S. Senate has passed a bill banning the import of enriched Russian uranium, which now awaits President Biden's signature. This legislative action comes as the White House, facing stalled congressional efforts, considered using executive authority to impose the ban. Russia, previously the top foreign supplier according to US Energy Department data, provided nearly 25% of the enriched uranium for America's over 90 commercial reactors. The bill, which passed by voice vote in December, includes provisions for waivers allowing imports until 2028 to give utilities time to adjust. This move is part of broader efforts to reduce dependency on Russian energy supplies. The Senate moved on Tuesday evening to approve the legislation, and Wyoming has expressed readiness to replace Russian uranium imports.
