VisitSecond Human Case of Bird Flu Confirmed in Michigan, Third U.S. Case This Year with Respiratory Symptoms
May 30, 2024, 05:39 PM
Michigan health officials have confirmed a second human case of H5N1 bird flu in the state, bringing the total number of cases in the U.S. this year to three. The second Michigan case involves a farm worker who tested positive for the virus. Additionally, a third U.S. case has been identified, also in a Michigan farm worker, who is the first to exhibit respiratory symptoms. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is providing technical assistance to Michigan as the state begins testing dairy farm workers in Ionia County for signs of prior bird flu infection. The CDC maintains that the risk to the general public remains low. The third case was reported on a different farm from the previous Michigan case and involves symptoms such as cough and eye discomfort. The infected individuals are said to be recovering and have been given oseltamivir and are in isolation.
