VisitSecond Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Overturn: 21 States Enact Abortion Bans, Affecting 1 in 3 Women
Jun 24, 2024, 05:16 PM
Today marks the second anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling that had protected women's reproductive rights for nearly 50 years. Since the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, 21 states have enacted strict abortion bans, severely limiting access to reproductive healthcare for millions of American women. The consequences of this ruling have been widespread, with many women forced to travel out-of-state for abortions or face dangerous health risks due to restricted access to care. Additionally, access to birth control and IVF has also been targeted. Currently, 1 in 3 women live in states with abortion bans. Democratic lawmakers and activists continue to push for federal legislation to restore and protect reproductive rights, including the Women's Health Protection Act. They emphasize that decisions about reproductive health should be made by women and their doctors, not politicians. The fight to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law remains a central issue for many in Congress and across the nation.
