VisitSDF Crosses Euphrates, Seizes Deir ez-Zor and Key Border Crossing After Syrian Forces Withdraw
Dec 6, 2024, 02:51 PM
US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have crossed the Euphrates River and entered the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor for the first time since 2017, following the withdrawal of Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militias toward Homs and Damascus. The SDF has taken control of key strategic locations, including the Deir ez-Zor military airport, Al-Mayadin, and the Al-Bukamal border crossing with Iraq. The Deir ez-Zor Military Council, part of the SDF, has played a key role in securing the western bank of the Euphrates River. The withdrawal marks a significant shift in control, with the SDF now declaring full control over Deir ez-Zor province. This development disrupts a critical supply corridor used by Iran to arm Lebanese Hezbollah and other proxy forces. Celebrations have been reported in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor as SDF forces secure their positions in the area.
