VisitScientists and Google AI Identify Bryde’s Whale 'Biotwang' in Mariana Trench
Sep 18, 2024, 03:04 PM
Scientists have identified the source of a mysterious sound known as 'biotwang,' first heard in the Mariana Trench a decade ago. The sound has been attributed to the understudied Bryde’s whale. Google AI has introduced a new whale bioacoustics model that can identify eight distinct whale species, including multiple calls for two of those species. This model includes the 'biotwang' sounds attributed to Bryde’s whale. The development, referred to as 'Shazam for whales,' uses AI to track and identify whale sounds in the Mariana Trench.
