Scientists Create Yeast Strain with Over 50% Synthetic DNA, Paving the Way for Synthetic Genome and Brewing Cannabinoids in Bioreactors
Nov 8, 2023, 04:45 PM
Biologists have created a strain of yeast with a genome that is more than 50% synthetic DNA. The yeast has had half its DNA replaced with artificial chromosomes, a major step towards creating the first complex cell with an entirely synthetic genome. Researchers have also created designer versions of all yeast chromosomes and incorporated almost half of them into cells that can survive and reproduce. This breakthrough suggests a future where cannabinoids like THC and CBD can be grown in bioreactors instead of being farmed.
