San Diego Votes 3-1 for 'Super Sanctuary'; Sheriff Martinez Defies Policy

On December 11, 2024, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 to designate the county as a "Super Sanctuary," limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), even in cases involving serious crimes like rape. The county already allocates $5 million in legal aid to immigrants. However, Sheriff Kelly Martinez announced that her office will not adhere to the new policy, asserting her independence as an elected official. "The Sheriff’s Office will not be changing its practices based on the Board’s resolution and policy that was passed," she stated. She emphasized that the Board does not set policies for the Sheriff's Department and that she maintains control over county jail practices.
