Oct 13, 2024, 02:46 PM
Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich set a new women's marathon world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, finishing with a time of 2:09:57. This achievement makes her the first woman in history to complete a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes, shattering the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa in Berlin in 2023. Chepngetich's performance was marked by consistent pacing, with splits of 15:00 for 5K, 30:14 for 10K, and 1:04:16 for the half marathon. She maintained a strong lead throughout the race and finished 10th overall among both men and women. John Korir clinched the men's title with a time of 2:02:43. The top American finishers were CJ Albertson, who placed 7th in the men's race with a time of 2:08:17, and Susanna Sullivan, who also placed 7th in the women's race with a time of 2:21:56, both setting new personal bests.
