Oct 13, 2024, 02:42 PM
Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich made history at the 2024 Chicago Marathon by breaking the women's marathon world record with a time of 2:09:56. This achievement marks the first time a woman has completed a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes, shattering the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa in Berlin 2023. Chepngetich's performance included impressive splits, such as 15:00 for the first 5K and 1:04:16 at the halfway mark. She led the women's race by a significant margin, finishing 10th overall among all participants and beating all but two American men, including Zach Panning.
