Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich has shattered the women's marathon world record at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, finishing with an unprecedented time of 2:09:56. This historic performance makes her the first woman ever to complete a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes, breaking the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa in Berlin in 2023. Chepngetich's victory marks her third win at the Chicago Marathon. In the men's race, Kenya's John Korir won with a time of 2:02:43, the second-fastest in Chicago Marathon history. Chepngetich's record-breaking run saw her leading the women's elite race by a significant margin and finishing 10th overall among all participants. Ethiopia's Sutume Kebede and Kenya's Irine Cheptai finished second and third respectively.
