VisitRussian Resolution on Preventing Arms Race in Space Fails at UN Security Council with Split Vote
May 20, 2024, 09:30 PM
A Russian-drafted resolution aimed at preventing the placement, threat, or use of nuclear weapons in outer space failed to pass in the United Nations Security Council. The resolution, which sought to prevent an arms race in space, did not secure the necessary nine votes out of fifteen. The voting results were evenly split, with seven countries voting in favor, seven against, and one abstention from Switzerland. The resolution was supported by Russia and China, but faced opposition from Western countries. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, criticized the outcome, suggesting that the West intends to continue the militarization of space. The resolution called on all countries to prevent “for all time” the placement, threat or use of any weapons in outer space.
